The Minister of Defense Vlado Misajlovski, together with the Chief of the Army General Staff, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, met today, 20 April, with the United States Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, at the “Ilinden” barracks in Skopje. The meeting focused on investments in the Army, the fulfilment of NATO Capability Targets, and the strengthening of the Alliance’s collective defense.
At the meeting, Minister Misajlovski emphasized that Macedonian defense budget is on an upward trajectory and aligned with the planned growth framework. “32.5 percent of the Budget is allocated for the procurement of new and modern equipment,” Misajlovski stated.
“Our country is a credible ally with an exceptionally high level of investment in the process of modernization and equipping,” Misajlovski said, adding that the country significantly exceeds the NATO standard of 20 percent for this purpose. Misajlovski further emphasized that the country is on track to meet the jointly agreed target of 3.5% of GDP allocated to the defense budget, as well as 1.5% of GDP for defense-related activities and projects by 2035.
General Lafchiski informed that Exercise “FLASH 26” is currently underway, during which the Light Infantry Battalion Group (LIBG) will undergo evaluation, emphasizing the support of the United States and Allies in achieving this NATO Capability Target.
During the visit, service personnel from the Special Forces Battalion and the Reconnaissance and Intelligence Battalion conducted a demonstration exercise, showcasing a portion of their capabilities, training, and readiness to execute complex missions.
Following the exercise, Ambassador Whitaker had the opportunity to view a static display, where selected equipment, weapons systems, materiel, and vehicles used by the Army units were presented.
The event was attended by the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, Nicole Varnes, generals of the Army, and representatives from the Army, the Ministry of Defense, and the United States Embassy in our country.
The visit of the United States Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, reaffirms the strong partnership and Alliance relationship between the Republic of North Macedonia and the United States of America.
