As part of the activities, traditionally held in the lead-up to August 18 – Army Day with a ceremonial formation at the Military Stadium in the City Park, members of the commands and units began the final sports competitions today.
The final sports competitions were officially opened by the Chief of the General Staff, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, who emphasized that sport and the military profession share the same values. Physical fitness and sports in general play a significant role in the effective execution of missions and tasks, directly impacting combat readiness. That is why the celebration of our most important military holiday begins with sports games.
“The sports games, individual and collective, are not just a competition. They are a symbol of physical and mental readiness, discipline, endurance and character – values that are deeply rooted in our military profession. On this occasion, I would like to emphasize that I am particularly proud of the outstanding results achieved by the members who participate in national and international sporting events, thus contributing to an even greater affirmation of the Army and the state,” added General Lafchiski.
General Lafchiski emphasized that during the competitions, fair play, friendship, and a competitive spirit should dominate, with mandatory adherence to safety measures for the life and health of the participants, after which, in the spirit of the motto “May the best win,” he declared the sports competitions open.
After the completion of the cross-country running, indoor soccer, table tennis, volleyball and basketball competitions, awards will be presented to the top-ranked teams and individuals. The most successful unit will be awarded a transitional cup.
