Participation of the Republic of Macedonia in the peace mission of the United Nations in Lebanon, UNIFIL
The security and prosperity in global terms depend more and more on the effective multilateral system. The strategic partnership with the Organization of the United Nations, whose Treaty represents the fundamental framework of the international relations, are the priority of the European Union and NATO on the international security scene. Hence, the contribution of the Republic of Macedonia in the military part with respect to the missions led by the Organization of the United National is a confirmation of the effective membership of the Republic of Macedonia in the Organization and its strategic determinations.
In May 2007, the Republic of Macedonia launched its participation in the UN-led peace mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL, with one ARM representative as a Staff Officer in the Joint Operation Center in Lebanon.
The declared contribution of the Republic of Macedonia with the staff officer was implemented by the adoption of the Decision by the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia on April 27, 2008. The Decision was executed on May 16, 2007.
On June 1, 2008, the Republic of Macedonia continued its contribution to the peace mission UNIFIL in Lebanon, by sending a new staff officer, which was the first rotation of Macedonian personnel within the UNIFIL operation. This is a one-year term and is expected to end in June 2009.
The Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia assess that there is enough capacity to continue to military contribution to the UN-led UNIFIL mission in Lebanon, both in 2009 and 2010. The continuation of the contribution is another confirmation of the gained experience in the international environment, and the political manifestation of the strategic determinations of the Republic of Macedonia.
