A delegation of the Army, led by the Chief of the General Staff, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, participated in the ceremony marking 9 May – Victory Day over Fascism and Europe Day.
The Army delegation laid a wreath of fresh flowers at the “Liberators of Skopje” monument on the plateau in front of the Government building, emphasizing its commitment to preserving the anti-fascist legacy, honoring the Macedonian fighters who gave their lives for the homeland, and reaffirming the country’s clear and firm path toward a European future. The Prime Minister, Prof. Dr. Hristijan Mickoski and EU Ambassador, H.E. Michalis Rokas addressed the audience at the event.
9 May commemorates the end of the World War II in Europe, marked by the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. The date is also celebrated as Europe Day, symbolizing peace, unity, and European cooperation. On this day in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented the “Schuman Declaration,” proposing the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community. This community, founded by France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, was the first of a series of supranational European institutions that later evolved into today’s European Union.
